#ViMoveForClimate – a project for future generations

We’re going one step further

Viessmann stands for climate solutions. With #ViMoveForClimate, Viessmann is expanding its commitment to the cause. The idea is simple: You exercise, and we reward your activity by planting trees. Every kilometer and every minute counts.

Trees are carbon sinks thanks to photosynthesis that permit the absorption of CO2  through the tree’s leaves. It then turns the carbon dioxide into sugar needed for it to grow. As it grows, the tree is able to lock away the CO2  in its branches and roots.*

Exercise for the environment

We’ve already made a difference with #ViMoveForClimate: Together, we have pledged to plant one million trees around the world in various climate conservation projects. Viessmann converts every kilometer run or cycled, every minute on the weight racks or on the training mat into tree saplings to be planted. Participants can choose from almost 30 types of sports and track their progress with the ViMove app.

Trees for North Hesse

We are also committed to preserving the forests of Germany, including in our home state of North Hesse. Together with several groups, we are planting 15000 oak trees in the forest of Battenfeld, which belongs to the municipality of Allendorf (Eder), through #ViMoveForClimate.

Donating trees for sustainability

We are committed to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, which is why we selected CHOOOSE as a partner to support our donations in the past. CHOOOSE selected projects for us that aligned with at least three of these goals: Health, climate conservation and living on the land. These projects have a positive impact on the environment as well as social and economic development. The following projects have received donations of trees from Viessmann:

Care for the soil, income for the people

The International Small Group and Tree Planting Program in Uganda serves nearly 300 small farmer groups with nearly 2000 members. The farmers purchase seeds and develop their own nurseries, where the trees stabilize the soil and the farmers receive carbon credits for planting, which can be sold to generate additional income.

Reconstructing already damaged ecosystems

The goal of Chyulu Hills REDD+ project is to protect the landscape of the Chyulu Hills in Kenya, its forests, savannas, wetlands and springs, as well as the lions, cheetahs, rhinos and elephants that make up its animal population. The restoration of the damaged ecosystems is an important part of the project, and tree nurseries are being established to this end.

Trees to protect from the expanding desert

The China Green Foundation is an important NGO fundraising for the development of sustainable forestry in China. One of their many projects is the “Million Forest Plan – Edge Protective Belt along Deserts”, which involves planting around 8,000 trees in Inner Mongolia to counter expanding deserts.

Forests for the suburbs

The PosadiLes (Plant a Forest) project was initiated by the Green-Movement of Russia ECA. The reforestation project began with the creation of nurseries, but in recent years, the focus has mainly been on large-scale planting projects planting trees in suburban areas.

Climate conservation for the island

Forest Carbon UK was formed in 2006 to create new forest cover in the UK. Companies can use it as a carbon sink for their emissions. As of June 2020, Forest Carbon has already created 179 new UK forest areas totaling 9.5 million trees and covering 13500 acres.

Trees for North Hesse

Hesse’s forest is also close to our hearts. Increasingly dry periods are damaging the native trees and leaving them vulnerable to bark beetles. Our contributions include planting native species like cherry trees, wild service trees and Norway maples in the community forests in Allendorf (Eder). Cross your fingers: We hope that the soil will be moist enough to continue planting in the summer of 2021.

Reforestation for better soil quality

The farmers in northern Peru suffer under the dry desertification. The Reforest’Action project plants silver pines, cedars and eucalyptus here, integrating the trees into the agricultural region to improve the soil quality. More than 1500 families take part in planting and caring for the trees, and they receive training in sustainability from the NGO Progreso.

Fresh seedlings for a treeless land

Just two percent of Haiti’s surface area is still forested. This is primarily due to the production of charcoal, which serves as a source of energy for many people. In 2020, Reforest’Action already planted 250000 seedlings from trees ranging from cedar acacia and mahogany to mango, avocado and cashew. More trees will be added to the count in 2021, and the project also aims to boost the environmental awareness of the local people.

*Our methodology of calculating CO2  emissions that are removed from the atmosphere is based on the fact that a healthy tree  – during an average lifetime of 100 years – removes ten kilogram of CO2  from the atmosphere per year. In sum, that accounts one ton CO2  in 100 years. However, these are average values only: The younger a tree, the less CO2  it, of course, removes.
